Values

Habit 3: Put First Things First

Stephen Covey writes:

To live a more balanced existence, you have to recognize that not doing everything that comes along is okay. There's no need to overextend yourself. All it takes is realizing that it's all right to say no when necessary and then focus on your highest priorities.

Habit 2: Begin with the End in Mind

Stephen Covey writes:
So, what do you want to be when you grow up? That question may appear a little trite, but think about it for a moment. Are you--right now--who you want to be, what you dreamed you'd be, doing what you always wanted to do? Be honest. Sometimes people find themselves achieving victories that are empty--successes that have come at the expense of things that were far more valuable to them. If your ladder is not leaning against the right wall, every step you take gets you to the wrong place faster.

Habit 1: Be Proactive

Stephen Covey writes:

Your life doesn't just "happen." Whether you know it or not, it is carefully designed by you. The choices, after all, are yours. You choose happiness. you choose sadness. you choose decisiveness. You choose ambivalence. You choose success. You choose failure. You choose courage. You choose fear. Just remember that every moment, every situation, provides a new choice. And in doing so, it gives you a perfect opportunity to do things differently to produce more positive results.

The CQCC Walk: Faith, Hope and Love

The words of the apostle Paul come to mind: "And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love." (1 Cor 13:13)

I think that these three themes are worthy of our remembrance each day as we go upon our way.

FAITH:

  • ask God what you would like to see
  • have a goal
  • be bold
  • remember the promises of God

HOPE:

  • expect God to act
  • have a positive attitude
  • let your positive expectation drive back any doubt or spiritual opposition you may face

The Value of Innocence

Jesus said, "I am sending you out like sheep among wolves. Therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves." (Matthew 10:16)

"Be wise about what is good, and innocent about what is evil." (Romans 16:19)

"Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them. For it is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret." (Ephesians 5:11-12)

CQCC Attitudes - the Be-Attitudes

If we asked the question, "What were Jesus' values?" ... what answer would we get?

When Jesus spoke to the crowds that followed him to a mountain-side, he spoke a message that is recorded as one of the world's most famous speeches. It is commonly known as the "Sermon on the Mount". At the start, Jesus lays out what could be called a vision statement, a charter, a declaration of values and a way to live. It is commonly known as "The Beatitudes". (Matthew 5:3-10)

Jesus lists eight core attitudes and the blessing or happiness that each attitude will bring.
